Penny Pinching

Okay, so weeks one and two have gone pretty well. Since we only get paid once a month, I've planned out meals and did the shopping for the entire month. I first took inventory of everything I already had and then marked what else I would need. Now I have a standard list to use. It was probably one of the longest grocery shopping trips I've ever taken, but well worth it. Hopefully I'll get a routine and it will go faster. Of course Ashlyn decided she was hungry right in the middle of the store and then took two times as long to eat because she loves to look around and take everything in. It's been great though! I haven't had to even think about going to the store, we've had a variety of foods, we're saving money, and it's been kinda fun to feel more organized.

Course, then I go to an enrichment activity about 90 day food storage and I learn that there is so much more I need to be working on. It was pretty enlightening and motivating. I learned I'm on the right track, I've just got a ways more to go......then we'll start working on the year supply. I was amazed to learn of the girls in my ward that actually use wheat grinders and make things from scratch the way they do! Do all of you do this or know how and I'm just way behind???!!!! It's something I've been feeling more concerned about the last while and I'm a little excited to learn so that we can feel more secure. I might even start bottling soon.

My sister in law gave me the link to this great article. Check it out if you haven't already read it. It gives great tips and helps to give a different perspective on the way we shop & live.

By the way, I'm sorry to hear that there has still been snow in Utah. That stinks! The other day it was 97 degrees here. It's great for now, but I'm getting really nervous to spend our first summer here. Even Donovan, our dog who usually has alot of puppy energy, is lazy and sleeps alot because it's so hot.
As always, we'd love to have anyone come visit anytime.....you've got a bed ready and waiting!

You remind me that I need to write that post. I have twisted my monthly grocery shopping just a little this month and hopefully it will save us more money!

You are definitely on the right track. It takes time and a lot of self discipline. I don't really know anyone up here that does the whole wheat grinder and makes stuff from scratch. Usually everyone has the wheat but then has absolutely no idea what to do with it. Keep at it. You should send me your monthly dinner plan so I can get some ideas of new things to try. Do you guys have a freezer (other than what is in the kitchen)? If so, I have some recipes for you that work great and taste great after being frozen. I should just send them to you anyway because you can make them anyways and just have leftovers for the next day.

Your little girl is so cute. My sister and her kids are moving to AZ in a few weeks, so hopefully I will be down to visit you soon.
